Jhon
Jhon arrived in the United States from Colombia with his wife, who was pregnant at the time, and their three children, fleeing violence and seeking a better future. When they arrived in 2023, the challenges were overwhelming: no job, no permanent place to live, and no idea where to begin in this new country.
In the midst of uncertainty, Jhon came across a Facebook post that introduced him to the Centro de los Trabajadores. He reached out and was welcomed through the “Bienvenidos a Denver” program The Centro de los trabajadores. While living temporarily in a shelter hotel, he learned about the WorkReady program, led by del Centro de los trabajadores, and joined immediately. That was the beginning of a life-changing connection.
What gave Jhon confidence was seeing how genuine and committed the organization was. “It felt like family,” he says. “A place where you’re always welcome and where you can grow.”
Jhon took part in a wide range of trainings: English, computer skills, labor rights, financial literacy, cultural orientation, and job interview preparation. One of the most transformative experiences was his culinary training through MSU, a dream he had always carried with him.=
“It was amazing,” Jhon shares. “I learned everything I needed to succeed in a professional kitchen—proper measurement, food temperatures, hygiene standards, cross-contamination prevention. Now I apply all of that in my daily work.”
Through job fairs, interview preparation, and the consistent guidance of his case manager, Jhon landed a job at a restaurant in Denver, where he has been working for over six months. He now earns above minimum wage and is finally experiencing the financial stability he longed for.
“Our life changed completely,” he reflects. “We went from living in shelters and not knowing what to eat, to having our own apartment and a sense of stability. We truly value every step of this journey.”
To other immigrants just starting out, Jhon offers a powerful message: “Be patient and stay connected with the Centro de los Trabajadores. Take advantage of the workshops and resources. Choose the right path and stay engaged with the community. They’re here to help.”
Today, the Centro de los Trabajadores is an essential part of Jhon’s personal journey. “They gave me one of the biggest sources of support I’ve had in this country. They helped me find my job, gain stability, and believe in myself again.”
